Tea meditation to connect with joy

Tea Meditation to connect with joy _ Gabriela Green Blog _ www.gabriela.green feature (1)
The tea meditation starts with the moment when you decide to make yourself a tea and you’re heading towards your kettle. You already made the first step for achieving a bit of calm in your day. It means you stopped whatever you were doing and you can use this time to clear your mind.

The simplicity of the tea meditation makes it easy to access at any time and place. The only things needed for enjoying this moment of calm are:
  • Yourself fully present in the moment
  • A teacup
  • Boiling water
  • Tea
  • A few minutes you can spend only with your cup of tea

Tea meditation to connect with joy

Slow down
Pick the teacup you will use for preparing your tea.
Take it in your hands and feel the texture, the shape, look at the colors
Slowly put it down on the table, touch the surface of the table and feel the texture.

Get the tea leaves
Carefully place them in your cup
Thank them for being here and for giving you the gift of tea

Now pay attention to any sounds you hear around you.
Listen to the ones close-by or further away.

Pour the crystal clear water in your kettle and prepare to boil it

Take a look at the surroundings, take a deep breath and start the kettle.

Close your eyes and practice deep breathing until you hear the water boiling.
Try to clear your mind of any thoughts.

Now, remember one moment in life when you felt pure joy.
Focus on that moment and on the way you felt back then.
Feel the bursting joy within and stay with it for a while Be still
And just feel the joy

Once the water stopped boiling, open your eyes.
Slowly pour it over the tea leaves you prepared earlier

Watch how the water brings the tea leaves back to life
They unfold and unravel under the warmth of the water
They are soaking up all the goodness of nature, soaking up pure life.

Imagine yourself filling out with joy and life
the same way the tea leaves are unraveling in the teacup in front of you

Close your eyes and be with that feeling of joy for a couple of minutes.

Now that your tea is ready, slowly open your eyes.
Strain the leaves
Place them gently next to your cup
Take a moment to look at them
Observe their true nature
Observe their natural state
Imagine how a part of mother nature is now resting there in front of your eyes
And it helped you make the tea you will soon taste

Hold your teacup
And let every sip of tea fill you with joy
Let the joy flow to every part of our body
Let it wash away any type of pain or sorrow you might feel
The tea you are holding in your hands represents all the joy found in nature
This joy is endless
Thank nature and enjoy every sip

Quote on tea

After this tea meditation to connect with joy, to continue your day with calm, read this quote from the Vietnamese Buddhist monk and peace activist, founder of the Plum Village Tradition, Thich Nhat Hanh:

“You must be completely awake in the present to enjoy the tea.
Only in the awareness of the present, can your hands feel the pleasant warmth of the cup.
Only in the present, can you savor the aroma, taste the sweetness, appreciate the delicacy.
If you are ruminating about the past, or worrying about the future, you will completely miss the experience of enjoying the cup of tea.
You will look down at the cup, and the tea will be gone.
Life is like that.
If you are not fully present, you will look around and it will be gone.
You will have missed the feel, the aroma, the delicacy and beauty of life.
It will seem to be speeding past you. The past is finished.
Learn from it and let it go.
The future is not even here yet. Plan for it, but do not waste your time worrying about it.
Worrying is worthless.
When you stop ruminating about what has already happened, when you stop worrying about what might never happen, then you will be in the present moment.
Then you will begin to experience joy in life.”

― Thich Nhat Hanh
